Meeting Minutes

1/26/06 Seabrook Public Library 10:00 a.m.

Next meeting: Since April 27 falls during spring vacation for many, we will meet on May 4 at Dunbarton Public Library to discuss summer reading program ideas.

Chilis Conference March 9 at the Margate in Laconia:  YALS will have table space to display YA program ideas.  Amy will send the extra handouts from last spring’s NHLC program.  Everyone is to send past summer brochures to Ann for copying.  Nancy will be attending the conference and will coordinate the table display, send any display materials to Dunbarton.

NHSL News: Ann reminded everyone to check out the biography databases and vote for their choice by Monday, January 30.  There will be a children’s book review at the State Library April 10-14.

The Flume Award: The committee will be meeting April 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Dunbarton to select the 13 finalists for the 2007 list.  If unable to attend, send comments to Amy at Hudson.  Voting deadline for the 2006 award is April 30.  Ann will send out the logo and publicity soon.

Website: Jenn has included an area for meeting minutes.  Nancy offered to send her notes, since she types them up anyway.  The program ideas section will include a template for submitting additional ideas.  These will be sent to the webmaster for inclusion.  To keep the links on the site up to date, everyone is asked to bring any great sites they find for librarians or teens to each meeting, Jenn will change the ‘featured link’ each quarter.  We are looking into starting a blog for book reviews…one that group members can add to at anytime and others can submit reviews to be posted by the webmaster.  Ann will make copies of the YALS homepage for distribution at Chilis.

NHLC 2007: The conference will again be at the Mt Washington Hotel.  Ann is on the planning committee and looking for suggestions for YA related programs and speakers.  Suggestions from the group included dealing effectively with teens (for the non-YA staff), teens and technology (YALSA course), essential books for teens, connecting boys with books, any good YA author, the Flume winner, and collection development and the necessity of weeding.

Summer Reading: How to tie the YA program into CHILIS’ pirate theme “Treasure Reading”?  Suggestions included doing a single pirate program, using the Pirates card game, tying one or more programs into the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, themes of travel, treasure, global themes, modern day pirates, anti-piracy laws.  The reading incentive program from Rye Airfield has had limited appeal.  The Airfield gives a free admission to the skate park for every five books read.  Hector Diaz, who did the artwork for “Check Out a Hero” in 2004, died last Friday from cancer.

New Books and Recommendations: Crunch Time by Mariah Fredericks, New Boy by Julian Houston, Lord Loss by Darren Shan, Helicopter Man by Elizabeth Fensham, Magic or Madness by Justine Larbalestier, A Gathering of Shades by David Stahler, Jr., Gifts by Ursula K. LeGuin, Song of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Piccoult (her first book), and Inexcusable by Chris Lynch.

Recent and upcoming programs: Video game tournament…have board games on hand for those waiting to play; murder mystery; Dance Dance Revolution (DDR).
